How to cancel The New York Times
The New York Times does not let you cancel with a single click — you have to reach an agent, and they will offer you a discount first.
Short answer: go to www.nytimes.com/subscription/cancel, sign in, and follow the steps below.
Step by step
- Open nytimes.com/subscription/cancel while signed in
- The site routes most subscribers to a live chat agent — start it
- State plainly: 'I want to cancel my subscription.' Repeat once if offered a discount
- Ask for a cancellation confirmation email before you close the chat
What they don't tell you
- This is the classic retention wall: chat is mandatory for most accounts, and the agent will offer a discount before processing.
- Chat hours are limited — outside them the only route is phone.
- Keep the confirmation email. Without it there is no proof the cancellation was processed.
Before you cancel — the cheaper option
Agents routinely offer roughly half price for a year to keep you. If you would stay at that rate, ask before cancelling.
If you subscribed through Apple
The New York Times cannot cancel a subscription that Apple bills. On your iPhone open Settings → your name → Subscriptions, choose The New York Times, then Cancel Subscription. Check your receipt: if it came from Apple, that is your route.
How many others are you forgetting?
Receiptmark reads the receipts already sitting in your inbox and shows you every subscription you're paying for — with the receipt attached as proof. No bank login, no inbox access. Forward one receipt and see.
